Our Little Greenhouse

Spring has finally arrived, which means gardening season will soon be here for us Northerners! To get a head-start on our plants, my husband built us a small greenhouse last year.

This year, he will be making some improvements to it, including adding a floor (we had a muddy mess last year) and replacing the flimsy poly plastic with more durable material. He also has some interesting ideas on heating our greenhouse. It is still cold and snowy right now, so our plants would surely die without some extra heat. I will post further updates on his progress in the next couple weeks. Hopefully, we can give others some useful ideas so that those living in colder climates can garden more successfully!

    Nice post. Thank you so much for providing plenty of useful content. When going to build your own greenhouse, it is important to gather information for the greenhouse ideas and you should also be aware of how to maintain the internal temperature when weather conditions are not ideal outside. Build the plant house in such a way so that plants can remain protected in normal to harsh weather conditions.

Homemade Drain Cleaner

To avoid clogging and bad odors, sink and tub drains should be periodically cleaned. A once a month cleaning with a non-toxic, homemade cleaner prevents needing a stronger, usually sodium hydroxide (lye) based, cleaner to remove clogs.  Sodium hydroxide is extremely caustic, and will damage the lungs if inhaled, burn skin and eyes, and can be fatal if swallowed.  In addition, the heat generated by using sodium hydroxide can soften PVC pipes, and damage old, corroded pipes.  It also changes the pH of water and can cause fish kills. A much nicer alternative to this harsh chemical is the simple combination of baking soda and vinegar, followed with boiling water.  When baking soda and vinegar are combined, they foam and expand, cleaning the sides of your pipes and dissolving fatty acids.  The boiling water then washes it all away.  This method is a great way to use up the box of baking soda in your frig that is not longer doing a good job of d...

Fermented Dandelion Soda

It is Spring!  And it is likely that your yard is harboring an abundance of those cheery, little weeds known as dandelions (Taraxacum officinale).  Rather than let this prolific plant go to waste every year, I attempt to utilize them in some way.  I have dried and preserved the roots and leaves for medicinal uses, and eaten the fresh greens as a food source. This year, however, I thought I would try my hand at making a special treat using the flowers:  Dandelion Soda.  I started with a recipe I had found in a book years ago, called Dandelion Fizz.  Problem was, it wasn't really all that fizzy.  Still a good tasting drink, but it needed some work.  This year, I worked on modifying the recipe, and I came up with a good tasting drink that fizzes just like soda.
